The Re-Emergence of Psychedelics: Implications for Behavioral Health Treatment

The field of Psychedelic Medicine has gained significant popular and scientific attention over the past 3-4 years. This attention is primarily focused on the use of these substances for behavioral health disorders and for wellbeing. This presentation will provide a review of the psychedelic substances and how they impact the brain and behavior. Psilocybin, MDMA, and ketamine will be discussed as new research is showing positive impacts on various mental health and substance use disorders. Current regulatory issues and challenges will be discussed from the perspective of practicing clinicians.

Learning Objectives:

Attendees will gain an understanding of how psychedelics impact the brain and behavior.
Attendees will assess current research findings to determine which behavioral health disorders have shown positive treatment results from psychedelic-assisted therapy.
Attendees will have knowledge of the regulatory status of specific psychedelics and gain an understanding of how this may impact some future treatment interventions.

This presentation reveals insights from the 2023 State of Healthcare Training Survey, tailored to human services providers in mental health, substance use, applied behavior analysis, and disability services organizations. Key survey findings covering learning trends, DEI training effectiveness, and support for continuing education will be provided. The presentation will also provide actionable strategies for organizational leaders seeking to build strong training programs, bolster workforce development, and enhance staff competencies.
